Whimside is a pixel art style creature collector that runs along the bottom of your screen. This desktop companion game lets you catch, breed, and care for creatures called Whimlings while giving you the ability to multitask on your computer.
Gameplay: Capturing And Breeding Whimlings
The core gameplay loop revolves around capturing Whimlings in various biomes, breeding them to create new variations, and decorating their habitat. Each Whimling has five characteristics that can be combined through breeding, which you will need to do in order to continue and unlock more areas in the game. With this progression, you’ll get new biomes that introduce new Whimlings to discover and capture.
Features:
- Pixel art creature collection running on your desktop
- Breeding system with five mix and match characteristics
- Multiple themed biomes to unlock
- Habitat customization with decor you can buy
- Achievement & journal system for completionists
- Rare variations to collect
Not Quite An Idle Game
While Whimside shares some idle game elements, it’s not fully passive, especially in the early stages. You’ll need to actively watch for Whimlings and make breeding decisions, but the game respects your time and can be played at your own pace without feeling demanding or stressful.
My Thoughts
Whimside is a fantastic concept, it combines creature collecting in a more laidback and semi-idle way, making for a charming desktop companion. While the luck-based progression can occasionally frustrate or be a little slow, it doesn’t detract too negatively from the game. At its $5 price point on Steam, I would recommend it for those who like Pokemon-style collecting with a unique presentation, but not for those who prefer entirely idle games that require zero interaction.
