Split Fiction: A Gorgeous and Imaginative Co-Op Adventure

Every now and then a game comes along that doesn’t just entertain you, it changes your opinion on its whole genre. Split Fiction is a game that does exactly that.

A World Worth Getting Lost In

As soon as the story was introduced, I was hooked, not just by the stunning visuals (which remain breathtaking even when you’re zipping through the environment at top speed), but by the sheer imagination behind every detail and level

Each new part of the game feels like stepping into a new short story that’s bursting with creative design, clever mechanics, and side plots that feel just as important and memorable as the main arc.

The premise alone is genius, especially for anyone who loves writing and storytelling, and it’s executed with so much heart that I found myself enjoying every aspect of the game, even during the tricky parts.

The Perfect Amount of Challenge

Speaking of the tricky parts, some of the mechanics rely a bit on you being familiar with the playstyles of a few different genres, like platformers, shooters, etc. You definitely don’t need to be an expert but if you’ve never played a shooting game before, you might see yourself trying a few more times on a section.

The game isn’t necessarily hard, but some of the challenges aren’t always straightforward, and sometimes your brain might overthink things.  But when it just clicks, it’s so satisfying. There’s a definite sense of “aha!” throughout, especially when playing with a friend and you’re both trying wildly different solutions (and usually discovering the simplest one last).

Magnificent Storytelling

The juxtaposition between the two main characters is handled brilliantly; one is an optimisitic and happy fantasy writer and the other is a more down on their luck serious sci-fi writer. Their dynamic is compelling and adds emotional depth to the game and story as it plays out.

What truly ties it all together is the ending. Without giving anything away, it’s such a moving culmination of each character’s journey up until that point and shows how far they have come.

Split Fiction is pure co-op magic; it’s engaging, creative, and just a total blast to play with a friend. If you are looking for a fantastic co-op game with a lot of imagination and heart, you’re going to fall in love with this one.
