Handheld Gaming: Switch, Steam Deck & Legion Go

There are so many handheld gaming devices out there these days that the sheer variety can be both exciting and overwhelming. Having upgraded through the ranks—from the Nintendo Switch to the Steam Deck, and now to the Legion Go, I have thoughts about the strengths, weaknesses, and overall experience of using these three devices. Let’s dive into what each device offers and who would benefit the most from them.

Nintendo Switch: Simplicity and Accessible Fun

The Nintendo Switch is a device near and dear to many, known for its lightweight design and ease of use. If you’re looking for something that works flawlessly out of the box, requires no additional technical skills, and provides instant entertainment, the Switch is a stellar choice. Plus, it’s the exclusive gateway to Nintendo-only titles, making it essential for fans of games like Zelda, Pokemon, and Mario.

It also offers an OLED version at a premium price, delivering enhanced visuals. The Switch 2 offers upgraded performance, backwards compatibility, and games tailored for both the original Switch and Switch 2.

Best for: Casual gamers, families, and those who prioritize simplicity and access to Nintendo exclusives.

Steam Deck: Customizable but Focuses On Your Steam Library

For those who crave a balance between functionality and freedom, the Steam Deck hits a sweet spot. Running on a Linux operating system, it allows tech-savvy users to tinker with settings, install programs, and even access a web browser. While its customization options may require a bit of research, it’s an ideal choice for Steam users comfortable with the interface and eager to explore beyond its base capabilities, if you choose to. It also works out of the box with your Steam library.

Like the Switch, it boasts an OLED version for a better visual experience. The Steam Deck bridges the gap between plug-and-play and tailored setups.

Best for: Gamers who enjoy customization if wanted but prefer a manageable learning curve and easy access to their Steam library.

Legion Go: Power and Performance (For A Handheld Device)

When it comes to specs and versatility, the Legion Go steals the spotlight. It features the largest screen among the three devices, making gaming on the go a visually stunning experience. Its heftier design is offset by robust performance capabilities, allowing users to side-load drivers for enhanced gameplay. Think of it as a Windows-based touchscreen computer designed with gaming in mind. It is also comparable to the ROG Ally which I personally haven’t used but I hear is very similar.

This device handles not just gaming but multitasking, thanks to its ability to install apps like Discord and Spotify. While not fully optimized for graphically intensive new titles like Monster Hunter Wilds, the Legion Go provides customizable fan curves and power draw options for better control and efficiency.

Best for: Gamers who have a bit more technical experience looking to push their handheld gaming experience to a higher level.

Battery Life Blues

Across the board, battery life isn’t a strong suit for any of these devices, especially when running demanding hardware and software. Keep a charger nearby if you plan to play for extended sessions.

My Personal Favorite

After thorough use, the Legion Go has earned its spot as my favorite handheld gaming device. Its power, versatility, and ability to replace my Steam Deck make it the most played device in my arsenal. That said, the Switch still holds a special place for exclusive Nintendo titles—making it impossible to fully retire.

Which Is Right for You?

Selecting the perfect handheld gaming device depends entirely on your needs:

  • For plug-and-play simplicity and exclusives: Nintendo Switch
  • For light customization and easy access to your Steam library: Steam Deck
  • For better specs and multitasking capabilities: Legion Go

Each device shines in its own way, catering to different types of gamers, and only you can determine which one aligns best with your gaming style.
